Dominican Republic, Carnival Cruise Destination, $65M Investment

Friday, the Dominican Republic’s tourism minister Francisco Javier Garcia announced that construction of a modern cruise terminal just west of Puerto Plata in Maimón Bay will begin soon.Carnival Corporation, known the world around for their cruise lines, has invested $65 million to have the terminal and the town around it turned into a “cruise destination”, to include retail shops, restaurants, and a recreation complex for cruise passengers.When finished, the terminal will be large enough to berth two large cruise ships, and is expected to bring in around $30 million in its first year in operation.The terminal with take up about 50,000 square meters at Maimón Bay, with construction starting October 1 and lasting two years. It will create 800 direct jobs, and as the town becomes more popular, more jobs will likely be created.
